Similar to Black beech but smaller growing, this NZ native grows into a tall slender tree with small oval smooth-edged shiny green leaves with paler undersides. Older trees have a somewhat tiered look. Requires well drained soil and benefits from a shady situation in the garden. Hardy. Evergreen.
