A compact, dwarf evergreen shrub, one of New Zealand's native myrtles, grown for its small, colourful foliage rather than its flowers. Glossy, leathery leaves emerge deep purple, mature to a bronze-green flushed with dark red veins, and deepen further to rich red tones in winter. Small, white, scented flowers appear in late summer, followed by dark berries. Its dense, bushy habit and tolerance of clipping make it a useful plant for borders, low hedging, containers, mixed plantings and underplanting beneath larger trees.

Thrives in full sun to light shade with well-drained soil that holds some moisture, and tolerates coastal conditions, cool climates, and dry periods once established. Hardy to moderate frost. Responds well to trimming, so prune as needed to maintain shape and density.
