A unique and nationally significant New Zealand native, Muehlenbeckia astonii is a deciduous shrub characterised by its distinctive, interlaced copper-toned wiry stems and small, rounded dark green leaves. Naturally found in the eastern South Island, particularly from Marlborough to Banks Peninsula, this rare species is both ornamental and ecologically important.
Ideal for use in pots or as a sculptural feature in garden beds, it responds well to clipping and shaping. Its fine texture and open form offer striking contrast when paired with bolder foliage plants.
Prefers full sun to semi-shade and tolerates a wide range of soil conditions. Hardy and drought-tolerant once established.
