Low Maintenance

Rhopalostylis sapida commonly known as the Nikau Palm, is New Zealand’s only native palm and one of the country’s most elegant foliage plants. Slow growing and highly decorative, it forms a slender trunk crowned with lush, arching fronds that create a distinctive tropical appearance. The short stalked leaves form a graceful shuttlecock shape, giving the plant a refined and architectural presence.

Mature plants produce clusters of cream to mauve flowers beneath the crownshaft, followed by bright red berries that are attractive to native birds and add seasonal interest. Its lush foliage makes it especially effective in subtropical, coastal and woodland style gardens.

Best grown in a sheltered position with moist, well drained soil, the Nikau Palm appreciates protection from harsh wind, heavy frost and exposed conditions. Ideal as a feature plant, it is an evergreen native that brings year round structure and a uniquely New Zealand character to the landscape.
