Sophora microphylla is a classic New Zealand native Kowhai, admired for its vibrant bright yellow spring flowers which cover the tree in a spectacular display and attract native birds, particularly tuī and bellbirds.
This species is known for its distinct tangled juvenile growth habit, which can persist for 10 years or more before developing into a more upright, tree-like form. It grows well in full sun to semi-shade and tolerates a range of reasonable soil conditions, provided it has good drainage.
An evergreen, hardy choice for native gardens, restoration projects or wildlife-friendly landscapes, Sophora microphylla offers lasting structure, seasonal colour and important ecological value.
