Clear the Area

Before you begin preparing the area for your new turf, apply Roundup or Buster approximately three weeks before laying. This allows sufficient time for existing weeds and grasses to die off completely, helping to create a clean, weed-free base.

Install Irrigation and Check Drainage

If you are installing an irrigation system, now is the time to do it before final surface preparation. Ensure all sprinklers and pipework are correctly positioned, and check that the area drains freely with no low spots where water can pool, as good drainage is essential for a healthy lawn.

Prepare the Area

Remove any dead weeds, old grass, roots, rocks, and debris from the site. Loosen and level the soil, then incorporate compost or soil conditioner to improve soil structure and create a healthy, nutrient-rich foundation for strong root growth and a thriving new lawn.

Level and Firm the Ground

Rake the area smooth, filling any low spots and removing any remaining lumps. Lightly compact the soil to create a firm, even surface that will provide good contact between the turf and the soil beneath. Allow the area to settle after rain or watering, then check the levels and make any final adjustments before laying the turf.

Use the calculator above to estimate how much turf you’ll need. All turf is cut fresh to order on the morning of delivery and should be laid the same day. As a guide, a typical DIY installer can lay around 30m² per hour, depending on site conditions and preparation.


Begin laying along a straight edge, working in staggered rows like brickwork to minimise visible joins. Butt each piece tightly together without overlapping or leaving gaps, ensuring good contact with the soil below. Trim edges neatly with a sharp knife for a clean, professional finish.

Water and Establish

Water and Establish

Water the turf thoroughly immediately after laying to help it settle and encourage root contact with the soil. Keep the lawn consistently moist for the first 2–3 weeks, adjusting watering based on weather conditions. Avoid heavy foot traffic during this period to allow the turf to properly establish and root in.

In the heat of summer, watering 2-3 times a day is recommended.

What are the turf dimensions?

1 roll = 1m² Each roll is 2500mm x 400mm (1m²).
When rolled, the dimensions are approx. 300mm diameter x 400mm wide.

Thickness is 10-15mm.

Average weight is 14kg.

Minimum Order?

1 roll (1m²). Cut fresh to order, so payment required in advance.

Delivery?

Delivery is available for a minimum order of 3 pallets (150m²), with each pallet containing 50 rolls (50m²).

Delivery is handled by a third-party freight provider, so freight costs will be confirmed upon enquiry. Please note that delivery availability and pricing for addresses outside the Christchurch city area may vary and will be confirmed at the time of enquiry.

Texture Turf, tolerates shady areas. Grows well in semi shade to full sun situations.

When can you lay lush lawn?

All year-round.

How long does turf take to establish after installation?

Most turf establishes within 2-4 weeks, depending on weather, soil preparation, and watering. You can usually walk on it lightly after about 2 weeks, but avoid heavy use until the roots have properly knitted into the soil.

How often should I water new turf?

Light watering for the first 10 - 14 days to keep the roots moist. In summer 2 to 3 times a day.

Once Established reduce watering to 2-3 deep waterings per week, depending on season and rainfall. Ideally in the morning.

When can I mow my new lawn for the first time?

When it is one-third above the first lay height.

Always use a sharp mower and remove no more than one-third of the grass height per mow, removing lawn clippings.

What maintenance does turf require long-term?

Regular mowing, seasonal fertilising, and appropriate watering are key. Occasional aeration and topdressing will keep your lawn healthy, dense, and looking its best year-round.
