Raukaua simplex is a small New Zealand native tree with thick, olive-green leaves. Mature leaves are usually undivided, though they may occasionally have two to three leaflets, with a distinctive joint where the leaf stalk meets the blade. Juvenile foliage differs markedly, consisting of three to five leaflets deeply incised into many lobes, giving a more divided appearance.

Endemic to New Zealand it is adapted to cooler climates and higher elevations, it is well suited to sheltered gardens with well drained soil. Evergreen and hardy, providing year-round structure and native character.
